Members of the CIOCAN Boards of Directors are busy executives who volunteer their time to serve as Directors of the Association. They are active supporters of this national community that advances the CIO profession and the IT industry in Canada.

Paul Parzen | Manager, Information Services, Compton Petroleum Corporation

As Manager, Information Services at Compton Petroleum Corporation, Paul has overall responsibility for the alignment, planning, delivery and operations related to information technology. Prior to joining Compton Petroleum in 2003, Paul was a Senior Manager in KPMG’s Information Risk Management practice.

Paul is a Chartered Accountant with specialization in information technology in addition to other technology related certifications. He currently serves on the boards of several community non-profit societies and was a member of the board of the Calgary Chapter of ISACA from 1999 through 2003.

Mike Battistel | VP Information Systems and Process, SMART Technologies

Mike is President of the Calgary Chapter, CIO Association of Canada.

Mike is a senior executive with over 30 years experience creating and leveraging business systems to ensure enterprises achieve their operational and strategic goals.

Mike’s experience encompasses executive and consulting roles in manufacturing, electronics, logistics, energy, education, health care, and broadcast media. During his 30 years in the industry Mike has led management teams in companies ranging from high tech startups to Fortune 50 enterprises operating in North America, Europe and Asia. He has steered organizations through mergers and acquisitions as well as sustained revenue growth exceeding 35% per year.

Mike is currently VP, Information Systems and Process at SMART Technologies, the industry pioneer and global leader in interactive whiteboards and group collaboration tools. He has been both a member of the Board of the CIO Association of Canada and President of that organization’s Vancouver Chapter. An active community member, he has also served on the Board of several non-profit societies.

Dan Boonstra | Information Technology Manager, Raytheon Canada Limited



Geoff Couldrey | Vice President Knowledge and Innovation, Mental Health Commission of Canada

Located in Calgary, Geoff is the Vice President, Knowledge and Innovation at the Mental Health Commission of Canada, a national organization with the goal of bringing into being an integrated mental health system that places people living with mental illness at its centre. Geoff leads the strategic planning and operations of the Commission’s information technology services and is also responsible for some of the Commission’s initiatives in mental health.

With over twenty years experience in information technology and consulting, Geoff has wide variety of experience within the technology and business fields including publishing, ecommerce and software development.

Chris Coupal | Manager, Architecture, Planning and Business Management, Husky Energy



Ron Daniels | Manager, Information Technology, Keyera Energy

Ron joined Keyera in 2000 as part of the project team to establish the infrastructure, application support, service desk, outsourcing arrangements and telecommunications, and to build and lead the technology support group.

Prior to Keyera, Ron was with Gulf Canada Resources for 25 years progressing through various business and technology areas of the company. As a member of the senior management information management team at Gulf, he was responsible for the world-wide support of commercial applications.

Ron holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Saskatchewan and has been a member of the CIO Association of Canada since 2008.

Clark Ferguson | CIO, The University of Lethbridge

Clark joined the University of Lethbridge in August 2010 to lead the IT Services program. Prior to joining the university, Clark worked with an electric power utility (BC Hydro) and telecommunications firms (Bell ExpressVu, Bell, Nortel and Bell Northern Research) leading IT infrastructure, telecommunications and security programs.

Through his career, Clark has worked on a variety of IT and business service improvement programs, drawing on the broad systems knowledge gained through his early security work and experience establishing business focused IT teams.

Clark completed Systems Design Engineering at the University of Waterloo, and has an MBA from the University of Ottawa.

Peter Kehler | Director, Information Systems, SAIT Polytechnic

Peter, as Director, Information Systems, SAIT Polytechnic, is responsible for the planning and implementation of systems and services to support the business of the institution, administrative processes, customer service and client support. This includes ensuring that IT supports the institution’s strategic plan and the business units' operational plans.

Prior to joining SAIT Polytechnic, Peter held senior positions at General Dynamics and a number of other post-secondary institutions in the Province of Alberta.


Ron Murch | Senior Instructor Emeritus, Management Information Systems, University of Calgary

Ron is a Senior Instructor Emeritus with the Haskayne School of Business at the University of Calgary and continues to work with his colleagues to bring his interests and experience in experiential learning, peer mentoring, Information Technologies and Managing Innovation to various courses and programs in the Haskayne School (B.Comm., MBA, Executive MBA). Following his official retirement, Ron has continued to teach in the Alberta/Haskayne Executive MBA Program. 

Ron is the recipient of several awards for teaching excellence from both students and faculty colleagues. He is an active member of a number of professional and community organizations and has been the academic liaison for the Haskayne School of Business since September 2011.
