Ontario Live Event: Women in IT

In acknowledgement of International Women’s Day on March 8th, and in response to recent press on the changing proportion of women in the workforce, the CIOCAN Ontario Chapter will host a panel discussion and social event on March 31. This event will take the format of a moderated panel discussion where panel members will present the perspective of the female CIO on demographic changes in the workforce and the implications for the information technology industry.

Speaker Panel:
Mary Anne Ballantyne, Assistant Head, Technology and Innovation, The Bishop Strachan School (BSS) (Moderator)
Mary Anne Ballantyne is Assistant Head, Technology and Innovation with The Bishop Strachan School (BSS). With 25 years experience in the technology industry as programmer, analyst, manager and senior leader, her passion today lies in the fusion of technology within the continuum of learning. As well as being founder and co-chair of the board for the CIS eLearning Consortium, Mary Anne also sits on the Ontario chapter board for the CIO Association of Canada, the largest association in Canada for CIOs. A firm advocate of the holistic leadership the CIO role plays in any organization, Mary Anne recognizes building innovative capacity is a challenge and currently leads the BSS effort in a formal IT Shared Services initiative with other Independent Schools.
Susan Doniz, CIO & Shared Services Canada, Proctor and Gamble
Susan leads the Canada Strategy end-to-end on Information Technology and Shared Services(Business Analytics, Purchasing, Project Management, Master Data, Financial Services&Accounting, Employee Services(Benefit, Payroll, Relocation, Travel), Business Information and Real Estate) reporting directly to the CEO of P&G Canada. She is part of the Core Leadership Team in leading the P&G Canadian business which totals over $3.0 billion in annual sales. As the largest Consumer Packaged Goods Company in Canada, P&G Canada was voted one of the top 50 best companies to work for in Canada. P&G Canada is P&G’s 6th largest country business and currently has over 2,000 employees not including 1,600 retirees making up P&G’s oldest subsidiary outside of the USA.
Additionally, she is responsible to the Global P&G CEO And CIO for a Business Transformation Initiative on driving faster & better decision making at P&G across all functions and all business units for 140,000 P&G employees in over 80 countries. As a top strategy for P&G Globally she works often with P&G top company officers.
Susan has enjoyed various long assignments with P&G in both developed(Europe Headquarters) and developing markets (She has lived in most countries in Latin America). Her roles have centred around strategy creation and moving adhoc success to sustainable and repeatable outcomes.
She is fluent in Spanish, English and has good French and Dutch. Educated both undergraduate in Canada and Graduate in Europe (Netherlands) and Executive Learning from Harvard. She also sponsors various cultural networks and is regarded as a business thought leader in Canada – she is asked to speak often at leadership and industry events. She serves on boards such as the CIO Association of Canada, Engineers without Borders and the Salvation Army National Board.
Daniela Crivianu-Gaita, CIO, Hospital for Sick Children
Daniela Crivianu-Gaita was appointed Chief Information Officer at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada, in 2006.
She joined SickKids in 1998 as a systems analyst and led the successful organization-wide implementation of the Picture Archiving and Communication System, used for computerizing, displaying, manipulating, transferring and archiving medical images. She then became a team leader and a project manager and, in 2005, Director of Information Services.
As Chief Information Officer she leads the selection and implementation of innovative technologies in support of the SickKids strategic directions. As well, she ensures participation in regional, provincial and national e-health initiatives, and leads the development and implementation of technologies, policies and procedures to support privacy legislation. She oversees the evolution of technology and information management services and has improved the IT support service to SickKids staff. She has also standardized the technology project management processes and implemented project management and portfolio management tools in support of these processes.
A native of Romania, Daniela Crivianu-Gaita was Head of the Computer Department at the County Hospital of Timisoara in Romania from June 1990 to December 1998, and she was a system engineer at the Metallic Construction Enterprise in Bocsa, Romania. She holds a master’s degree in computer science from the Polytechnic University of Timisoara.
Alice Keung, CIO Health Services Cluster, Ontario Ministry of Health(recognized as one of the WXN - Women’s Executive Network - Top 100 Women)
Alice Keung is the Chief Information Officer, Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, and Ministry of Health Promotion. A senior executive with international experience and a specialization in information technology management, Alice is a recognized leader with a demonstrated track record. Alice has extensive experience in negotiating and managing large scale projects, and building positive internal and external working partnerships.
Prior to joining the Ontario Public Service, Alice held the position of Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer at the National Bank of Canada in Montreal. In this role, Alice was responsible for technology strategy and innovation. Previous to that, Alice was Vice President and Chief Information Officer at Air Canada, where she was responsible for setting the technology innovation agenda of the airline and has delivered many of its customer self-service innovations, including the award winning airport automated check-in kiosks.
Alice’s additional achievements include being named twice as one of Canada’s Top 100 Most Influential Women, and one of the Top 40 for the corporate category. She is also the recipient of an award of distinction from Concordia University in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the world of business and to the community.

Panel members will draw on their experiences and share their perspectives on women in the IT industry and in the workplace and on the importance of mentoring programs to address demographic challenges.

• Are there opportunities to leverage changing demographics and maximize the capacity and contribution of women in IT roles
