Funding and Tax Breaks Critical to Digital Adoption, Successful Commercialization of Innovation

The CIO Association of Canada is undertaking two initiatives to help fuel Digital Adoption, which in turn contributes to the successful commercialization of innovation, (one of the themes of this year’s CIO Peer Forum). First, we are hosting a live Toronto Chapter event June 5 at the Microsoft Offices in Mississauga on the SR & ED Program, featuring senior CRA directors Lucie Bergevin and Helen Marquis, and Senior VP of Tax, Finance and Advocacy at CATAlliance, Russ Roberts. In consultation with CIOCAN project lead Arik Kalininsky, the CRA directors have created a new slide presentation on the program aimed specifically at IT Leaders, and this presentation will be available to all registrants to the event. Russ Roberts will share insights from his 25 + years experience with SR & ED claims. CFOs are invited to attend with their CIOs. As Russ Roberts told us, ” When I consult on a SR & ED claim, I insist that the CIO is at the table. The collaboration between the CIO and the CFO is critical not only to creating a successful claim, but also to recognizing opportunities for same”.

Second, we are pursuing a relationship with the BDC (Business Development Bank of Canada) in tandem with our partners at ICTC and CATAlliance. The BDC received $200 million as part of the Digital Canada 150 announcement, to help SMEs with Digital Adoption. We feel that the consortium can provide value and influence as a trusted channel to help BDC effectively connect with industry and business to optimize the results of the investment, and that our members can benefit from the shared knowledge and connections.
