Rachel Porteous
How long have you been a member of CIOCAN, and what initially inspired you to join?
“I have been a member of CIOCAN for several years ( since 2017) and what initially inspired me to join was the opportunity to connect with a trusted network of senior technology leaders across Canada. I was particularly drawn to CIOCAN’s focus on collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and advancing leadership in the CIO community.”
What has been the most valuable or important aspect of your membership experience?
“The most valuable aspect of my CIOCAN membership has been the strength of the community — having access to candid conversations with peers who understand the complexity of our roles. The ability to exchange insights, challenge perspectives, and learn from others’ experiences has been incredibly impactful both professionally and personally.”
What advice would you give to a female senior technology leader who is considering joining CIOCAN?
“I would strongly encourage her to join. CIOCAN offers a unique environment where you can build meaningful relationships, expand your influence, and contribute to shaping the future of technology leadership in Canada. It’s a space where your voice matters, and where you can both learn from and inspire others.”

“Strong leadership is built through community. When women in technology support and elevate one another, we don’t just advance individually — we transform the entire ecosystem.”
Doris Simcich
How long have you been a member of CIOCAN, and what initially inspired you to join?
I have been a member of the CIO Association of Canada for several years, drawn by its highly engaged community of senior technology leaders. After completing the CIOD program, I deepened my involvement, inspired by the opportunity to connect with peers navigating similar transformation priorities and leadership challenges. Over the past year, I have also had the privilege of leading events for the Toronto Chapter, further reinforcing my commitment to delivering meaningful value to our members.
What has been the most valuable or important aspect of your membership experience?
The most valuable aspect of my membership has been the strength of the trusted peer network. Through events and programs, leaders openly share insights, challenges, and lessons learned, fostering an environment of authenticity and collaboration. This level of candour, combined with diverse perspectives, has been instrumental in enhancing decision making and accelerating impact in my role.
What advice would you give to a female senior technology leader who is considering joining CIOCAN?
Lean into the community. CIOCAN provides a powerful platform to build meaningful connections, broaden perspectives, and amplify your voice. I have been continually inspired by how welcoming and supportive the community is for women in technology. For female senior leaders, it offers not only an opportunity for personal growth, but also a chance to support and elevate others, helping shape a more inclusive and future ready leadership landscape.
