The Director, Research & Innovation is a newly created role with a mandate to help “future-proof” the safety system in BC by strategically integrating data science and new technologies into Technical Safety BC’s oversight practices. The role is accountable for providing focused leadership on innovation both internally and externally. In the foreseeable future, the Director, Research & Innovation has a responsibility to assist Technical Safety BC to meaningfully address 4 key areas: 1) remote control and monitoring of regulated equipment over the internet; 2) safety oversight in remote areas;
3) evolving relationship between people and regulated equipment; and4) new tools to better serve clients. The Director, Research & Innovation has responsibility for strategy determination, empirical verification, judgement of merits, specifics and timing of changes and evaluation changes implemented. The Director, Research & Innovation reports to the VP, Data Analytics and Decision Science and provides coaching and supervision to 2 key management positions, the Leader, Innovation and a Leader, Research and Data Science. The Director, Research & Innovation is expected to collaborate across the organization and work effectively with a diverse array of external partners
The candidate must be an exceptional strategist and recognized thought-leader with an extraordinary capacity to distill complexity to set goals and map out concrete actions to achieve meaningful and practical results in contexts involving the interface of people, information technology, digital technology, data science and artificial intelligence. The candidate must have abundant common sense, superb influencing, project management and negotiating skills, an integrative thinking-style and the proven capacity to successfully set direction and lead large change initiatives that cross organizational boundaries. A big-picture thinker with an entrepreneurial mindset, the candidate must have gravitas, have high integrity, sound judgment and a strong drive for results and the proven ability to organize communities of colleagues and external partners around key opportunities. A self-starter, team player, and inspirational leader, the candidate must have a collaborative style, the proven capacity to build and engage a high-performing team and a passion for excellence. A proactive and innovative thinker, the person must have the proven ability to anticipate and plan for change and a reputation for a win-win approach to solving problems and implementing change. The candidate must have at least 10 years of relevant leadership experience and the ability to work effectively in a progressive company with a solid union-management relationship. The ideal candidate has completed a degree in a relevant discipline in Science or Business, preferably at the Master’s level.
