Breakout Session: Adopting Emerging Technologies for Public Service Excellence

Thursday May 30, 2:50 pm - 3:35 pm

Session Description

Join us for an insightful session as The City of Calgary shares their journey of adopting emerging technologies such as AI, RPA (Robotic Process Automation), and IoT (Internet of Things) to enhance public service delivery and achieve operational excellence. Despite the complexities of managing an enterprise environment with over 15,000 employees and 30+ business lines, The City of Calgary has been at the forefront of innovation, garnering positive media attention for their efforts. With a small but committed technology and engineering team, they have implemented AI for various use cases including road pavement condition assessment, crowd counting, fleet vehicle preventive maintenance, and wastewater sanitation pipeline inspection. They are also working on their next generation AI-powered chatbots to enhance customer experience. The City’s award-winning LoRaWAN (Long Range Lower Power Wireless Area Network) infrastructure enables enterprise IoT sensor solutions to support important climate change studies such as downtown urban heat analysis and noise monitoring. The City also uses RPA software bots to automate more than 40 repetitive manual processes for internal and public-facing services. In this presentation, The City of Calgary will share insights into their newly developed corporate AI Strategy and emerging technology governance structure. Through use case studies they will explain how they manage various technical, organizational, ethical, privacy and security challenges to continuously leverage the opportunities that emerging technologies offer for innovation. The smart city living lab program and the TIC (Technology Innovation Center) lab will also be introduced to illustrate how The City of Calgary establishes technology platforms to support the community growth and digital equity.
